Dr Pelin Demirel is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Innovation at the Centre of Excellence for Innovation and Enterprise, University of Southampton. Prior to joining Southampton Business School in 2015, she worked as an Assistant Professor in Industrial Economics at University of Nottingham between 2008 and 2014. She holds a first degree in Economics from Middle East Technical University, Turkey and a PhD in Economics from the ESRC Innogen Centre at The Open University, UK (supervisors: Mariana Mazzucato & Paul Quintas; examiner: Giovanni Dosi).
Her research focuses on ‘innovation’ with a particular emphasis on environmental innovations, start-up companies and the relationships between finance, innovation and firm performance. In her previous research, she has studied various industries including the US pharmaceutical industry, UK clean-tech industry and the Indian knowledge-based services industry.
Investigating the potential of innovations as a facilitator for a more sustainable and equal society motivates her most recent research projects. She is currently the Principal Investigator of the ESRC Grant “ Innovating for a Low-Carbon Economy” (Ref: ES/L000628/1, £28,448) and a Co-Investigator of the Leverhulme Trust Grant “Sustaining Urban Habitats: An Interdisciplinary Approach” (£1.75 M). She has also recently completed two funded projects in this area: British Academy Small Research Grant for “Profiling the UK Clean Technology Sector” (£7,460) and University of Nottingham New Researchers’ Grant for “On the Drivers of Eco-Innovations: Empirical evidence from the UK” (£40,243).
