Joanna is Professor of Science and Technology Policy at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) of the University of Sussex since September 2016. Previously she worked as research group director of Innovation, Health and Science at RAND Europe, and was Professor of Biotechnology and Development at the Open University.

Her research and consultancy experience includes work on science and technology capacity building, North-South Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), innovation and development. She has carried out several studies looking at these issues in relation to agricultural and health related biotechnology and has also researched risk regulation, perception and management of risk of biotechnology. Joanna has worked in Central America, India, Southern Africa, Central and Eastern Europe and Russia.

Research interests

Joanna’s research interests include exploring the possibilities and limitations of new types of engagement between private and public sectors in bridging the divide between modern science and technology, innovation and the majority of the world’s population. Joanna is currently involved in a range of research projects looking at the relationships between biotechnology and genomics north-south public private partnerships (PPPs), S and T capacity building, innovation and development more generally.
