Jane Bower’s focus is on the management of technological innovation, with emphasis on the development of novel technologies in networks involving spinout firms. She trained initially as a molecular geneticist, spending15 years as a biomedical researcher at Edinburgh University, Stanford Medical School, and the MRC Human Genetics Unit.

Becoming increasingly involved in issues surrounding the transfer of novel technology and its commercialisation in small and large firms, she has managed a large number of research projects and evaluation and commercialisation projects for private and public sector organisations. The commercialisation projects included the planning and financing of a joint venture with an MIT spinout, an investigation of pharmaceutical industry/ university relationships in Japan (sponsored as a Royal Society Senior Research Fellow), and the design and financing of an energy technology venture fund, launched in 1999 (as the Nova Fund).

She has published extensively on technology commercialization and managing innovation in networks of small and large organizations.

She has been a Board member of a number of organisations public and private, including the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council from 2001-2005, and several small technology firms. She was a member of the Scottish Science Advisory Committee from 2002-2004, and Chairman of the Scottish Stem Cell Network.

Her interests span a number of high technology industries, particularly energy and life science industries.
