Janet Carsten is Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology, School of Social and Political Studies, University of Edinburgh and supervised Innogen PhD student Jennifer Spiers on her thesis "Secretly connected? Anonymous semen donation, genetics and meanings of kinshiop".

Research Interests

Janet is involved in teh following Innogen project:

• Blood work: investigating cultures of biomedicine in Malaysia and Britain

Her interests are kinship, including personhood, everyday makings of relatedness, and gender relations, and anthropological understandings of kinship; new reproductive technologies, birth ties and adoption. Future research seeks to extend this work into medical anthropology.
