Luigi Orsenigo is a full Professor of Applied Economics, at IUSS (Institute for Advanced Studies), Pavia, Italy.

After receiving his PhD from the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex, he has been affiliated with Bocconi University and the University of Brescia. He was Professor of Economics at the Open University, Faculty of Social Sciences, in the academic year 2007-2008 and he has been teaching and researching in various universities and research institutes in Europe and the USA.

Currently he is Fellow at CRIOS (Center for Research in Innovation, Organization and Strategy) at Bocconi University. He was ESRC- Honorary Fellow at the School of Social and Political Studies, University of Edinburgh from 2004 to 2012 and Visiting Fellow, The Open University, 2004-2009

He is Editor of The Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Advisory Editor of Research Policy and Associate Editor of Industrial and Corporate Change.

He has been advising on matters of innovation and industrial policy several Italian and international governmental bodies, institutions and firms. He served also as member of the “Observatory on biotechnology”, Presidency of the Council of Ministries, Italy.

His work concerns mainly the economics of innovation, industrial dynamics, evolutionary economics and the bio-pharmaceutical industry. He is author of more than 100 publications in major international journals, including the books “Innovation and the Evolution of Industries: History Friendly Models” (with F. Malerba, R. Nelson and S. Winter, CUP, 2015,forthcoming (which was awarded the Schumpeter Prize in 2012); The Emergence of Biotechnology.
