Summer issue of Science Scotland looks at the generation of red blood cells from embryonic stem cells
Dr Jo Mountford, University of Glasgow, is on a 'quest to manufacture blood from embryonic stem cells – enough to meet demand in every hospital in Scotland and beyond'.
Funding from the Wellcome Trust, the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and the Scottish Funding Council is supporting Dr Mountford and colleagues from three other Universities to develop clinically viable processes including the manufacturing of blood cells on an industrial scale.
Innogen is contributing research to the project on the risks and ethics of using blood products produced by non-conventional methodsï»¿.
