Consultation: A Vision for Science and Society

This is a response from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Centre for Social and Economic Research on Innovation in Genomics (ESRC Innogen Centre), based at the University of Edinburgh and the Open University.

The centre, which began in 2002, focuses on research that connects the social with the life sciences. The Innogen Centre is a member of the ESRC Genomics Network, and participates in a range of other relevant centres and activities, including the Edinburgh Beacon for Public Engagement (Beltane).

Researchers in the Innogen Centre have, for over twenty years, researched issues of engagement in the life sciences (agricultural including GM crops, health and animal), but also in other sciences and technologies of information, communication, energy and environment.

We have a strong research interest in global development, which has its own strong history of engagement and its conceptualisation. Innogen researchers both study the processes of public engagement and engage in its practice as a research tool.
