Who needs biotechnology, who wants it and who are the stakeholders?

Tait, J

16th EMBO / EMBL conference ‘Emerging Biotechnologies: Hype, Hope and Hard Reality’

Heidelberg, Germany

November 5 – 6 2015

Emerging advanced biotechnologies are raising tantalising prospects of meeting human needs and desires across the board in health, agriculture and environmental applications. However in all three areas we are struggling to devise governance systems that will continue to ensure safety and efficacy without stifling the innovative capacity of potential developers. The regulatory and governance systems that have worked so well for chemistry-led innovation (pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals) are not working for biology. This talk will analyse the nature of the problems being experienced in each of the three areas of application and suggest some novel approaches to governance of advanced biotechnologies that foster safe, effective and affordable solutions to some of today’s most pressing problems.
